Project Background
Several municipalities in Michoacán wanted to encourage recycling and reduce environmental impact by making waste separation easier and more consistent. However, there was no system in place to coordinate garbage collection routes or notify citizens in advance. Additionally, most people lacked motivation to separate waste properly. AmpleMax collaborated with ODIC to build a digital platform where garbage trucks would notify residents of their arrival in real time, encouraging them to separate organic from inorganic waste in exchange for eco-rewards.
We built a mobile platform to drive citizen engagement in recycling by making waste separation timely, rewarding, and hyperlocal.
Objectives
Create a digital bridge between sanitation services and residents.
Promote proper separation of waste at the source.
Increase recycling rates and environmental awareness.
Build a gamified reward system to change habits.
Provide real-time tracking of truck locations and routes.
Key Features Delivered
EcoRecycle App
Real-time truck GPS tracking and arrival notifications
Waste separation instructions and categories
Points system and leaderboard for eco-participation
Operator dashboard to monitor routes and participation metrics
Data export for city sustainability reporting
Newsfeed and blog
Our Approach
Stakeholder Alignment:
Collaborated with public agencies, sanitation contractors, and neighborhood associations.
Engaged community leaders to ensure cultural and logistical alignment.
Defined shared goals and success metrics for adoption and participation.
App Design for Low-Tech Users:
Developed a mobile app with a simple, icon-driven interface accessible for all ages and literacy levels.
Ensured offline functionality for areas with limited connectivity.
Route Integration & Pilot Testing:
Integrated waste collection schedules and routes into the app’s notification system.
Conducted a pilot in 4 neighborhoods with varied demographics and infrastructure.
Collected adoption and satisfaction data to refine the solution before scale-up.
Awareness Campaign & Rollout:
Launched public education campaigns via community events, posters, and local radio.
Partnered with schools to involve children as advocates for proper sanitation practices.
Expanded deployment to additional neighborhoods based on pilot success.
Results
57% increase in household waste separation in pilot zones.
Over 6,000 residents onboarded in first 3 months.
80% of notified residents participated in separation.
Reduced collection time by 22% due to more efficient routing.
Platform recognized in local sustainability awards program.
